Safety first for Artam.

Turkish rookie Can Artam faced the latest - and biggest - test of his debut FIA F3000 campaign to date when rain descended on the dramatic Spa-Francorchamps circuit ahead of round nine of the season.

The Super Nova driver had driven his yellow Lola in the wet before, as the previous round at the Hungaroring also started in soggy conditions, but the Spa circuit is altogether more daunting than the Hungarian venue, and caused the Turk to focus harder than he has had to all year.

Despite dropping back at the beginning of the 22-lap encounter, Artam quickly settled into driving a steady race, and kept going despite his car struggling for grip in the tricky conditions. Having survived numerous slides on the wet surface, Artam brought the car home in 13th place, just one behind erstwhile championship contender Enrico Toccacelo.

"The race was okay, but it was a tough start due to the weather conditions and I fell back a little," he admitted, "The pit-stop was good and I pushed harder after that. The track dried towards the end and I improved but, hopefully, I will be better at the last round in Monza."

"Can again played safe, as it is so hard to see what's happening ahead of you in these bad weather conditions," commented team manager David Sears, "Let's see what he can do in two weeks' time."
