Rookie Fabio di Giannantonio stuns with a home pole position during a dramatic, damp qualifying session for the Italian MotoGP at Mugello.

With slick tyres proving easily quickest in Qualifying 1 but rain still in the air, riders bolted out of the pits at the start of Q2 to try and set a lap time before another shower.

But the treacherous conditions almost immediately caught out Marc Marquez, who had just graduated through Q1 by shadowing Jack Miller in the closing stages, but highsided at Turn 2 of his out lap.

While Marquez was able to walk away, his RCV had barrel-rolled across the track, leaving it heavily damaged and forcing the session to be halted for a clean up.

Slicks were still the tyres of choice for the restart, when di Giannantonio - who had impressed by vaulting ahead of both Marquez and Miller to lead Q1 - set the early pace from fellow rookie Marco Bezzecchi and the other VR46 bike of Luca Marini.

Whenever he was knocked from the top, di Giannantonio responded time and time again, culminating in a 1m 46.156s pole lap as he leapt back ahead of Bezzecchi (also a first ever MotoGP front row) and Marini (best qualifying of the season) on an all-Italian front row!

Zarco, factory Ducati's Francesco Bagnaia and Yamaha's world champion Fabio Quartararo, the top non-Ducati rider, will form row two of Sunday's grid with Aprilia's Aleix Espargaro, LCR Honda's Takaaki Nakagami and Repsol Honda's Pol Espargaro on row three.

di Giannantonio's team-mate and triple 2022 race winner Enea Bastianini could only manage tenth, while Jorge Martin in eleventh will have a three-place grid penalty for 'being slow on the line and disturbing another rider on the last lap of FP3'.

After the earlier scare, and an exploratory lap to check his spare bike, Marc Marquez waited in the pits until the final minutes but was ultimately left 12th and last in the session.

Darryn Binder will need to serve a long lap penalty in the race for 'crashing while not respecting a yellow flag in FP3'.

Fabio Quartararo leads the MotoGP standings by just four points from Enea Bastianini after the Gresini Ducati rider’s third victory of the season at Le Mans, with Aprilia’s Aleix Espargaro just eight points from the top.

Quartararo won last year’s Mugello race after Francesco Bagnaia crashed from the lead on lap 2, but can the Frenchman again compensate for his M1’s lack of speed along the fastest straight on the MotoGP calendar?

Local legend Valentino Rossi had his #46 officially retired from MotoGP on Saturday.

The official MotoGP top speed record of 362.4km/h (225.2mph), first set by Johann Zarco at Qatar 2021, was equalled by Brad Binder at Mugello last season.

Test riders Michele Pirro (Ducati) and Lorenzo Savadori (Aprilia) are making their latest wild-card appearances this weekend.
