Benson to partner Schrader in new multi-car team.

With more and more Winston Cup outfits turning their attention to running two or more cars within the same team, it was no real surprise to see that two of the less successful single car outfits have decided to combine resources in an effort to push to the front of the grid.

The unsponsored , underfunded Tyler Jet Motorsports outfit have decided to sell their operation to the MB2 squad that currently runs Ken Schrader in the #36 Pontiac. Tyler Jet runs the #10 Pontiac for Johnny Benson.

MB2 co-owners Tom Beard, Nelson Bowers II, and Read Morton will oversee the Tyler Jet operation at its current base in Charlotte, North Carolina before looking to build a new shop for both cars in Concord, North Carolina for the start of the 2001 season.

"I think everyone knows the trend in Winston Cup toward multi-car teams," said Morton who helped set up the team with Bowers and Beard in 1996. " We are constantly looking down the line to determine what we need to do to make MB2 successful in the future." The team have yet to win a race with either Schrader or previous driver Ernie Irvan and Schrader is currently only 17th in points, one place behind Benson.

Benson has performed heroically throughout the year with no sponsorship on the car for virtually the entire season so far. An early season deal with Lycos.com finished and the company would not re-sign, even after Benson gave them some amazing exposure at the Daytona 500 by leading nearly 40 laps. Despite not even qualifying for one race this year, Benson is just 32 points behind two time race winner Jeremy Mayfield in the Winston Cup standings.

"This is as good as it gets," said Benson who is in his fifth year of WC competition. "To go from an unsponsored team to being part of MB2 and all the resources it brings to the table is fantastic."

Benson began thanking his new team immediately by finishing twelfth at Pocono last Sunday, seven places ahead of Schrader.
