Donlavey: If I could I'd go back to the Navy.

Junie Donlavey is one of the few figures in the NASCAR Winston Cup garage who can remember Japan's attack on Pearl Harbour in December 1941 and after serving his country in WWII Donlavey wishes he could sign up again as America tries to get back to normality. As it stands Donlavey and his Winston Cup team will make their own contributions to the fight against terrorism at Dover this weekend.

The Hills Brothers Coffee Junie Donlavey owned NASCAR Winston Cup team will be one of many helping to raise money for the Red Cross disaster relief effort in this weekend's MBNA Cal Ripken 400 at the Dover Downs International Speedway with the team donating $10 for every one of the race's 400 laps that driver Hut Stricklin completes on Sunday.

Donlavey has stronger feelings than most on last Tuesday's terrorist attacks on the World Trade Centre's and the Pentagon as he has clear memories of the attack on Pearl Harbour in December 1941, an event last Tuesday's acts have often been compared to.

"I was only 17 when Pearl Harbour happened, and it was that event that made me want to go into the service and try to help do something about it, which I did in January of 1943," said Donlavey. "But I'll tell you, what happened Tuesday, I believe, has hit a lot closer to home. When Japan bombed us (at Pearl Harbour in 1941), we came up with some solutions and we knew we could take care of that problem right away. But a sneak attack like what happened last Tuesday, it just tears you up. You've got to extend your heartfelt sorrows to all of those people and families it affected because it's just terrible, terrible.

"It's really a shame they caught us asleep. I think what happened is that a lot of people in this country have gotten complacent, but now we're right on the edge with what happened. Whoever perpetrated this terrible act, it's going to be a terrible thing for them when it catches up to them. I went into the Navy in 1943, and if I could, I'd go back into the Navy now. That's how angry it makes you."

Donlavey and driver Hut Stricklin will be donating $10 each for every lap the team completes this weekend in the MBNA Cal Ripken Jr. 400. Donlavey Racing team members will be wearing American flags on their uniforms throughout the race weekend at Dover. In addition, Donlavey Racing has added the American flag to the C-post on the Hills Bros Coffee Ford.

The Hills Bros Coffee Racing team will be taking "Car No. 30" to Dover Downs this weekend. It is the same car that the Hills Bros Coffee Racing team took to California earlier in the year and finished 12th. Its average start is 29.6 and its average finish is 28.5.

This season marks the 20th anniversary of Junie Donlavey's only points event win in the 1981 Mason-Dixon 500 at Dover Downs International Speedway. Jody Ridley was several laps down to race leader Neil Bonnett and Cale Yarborough, but was able to take advantage of their engine misfortunes to earn his first and only Winston Cup win.

In the last NASCAR Winston Cup event at Dover Stricklin started 42nd after qualifying was rained out and positions were lined up by owner's points for the MBNA 400 in June. Stricklin was involved in an accident with Robert Pressley on lap 109, and Stricklin raced the majority of the day with the toe out on the car and finished the race in the 30th position.

Stricklin will be competing in his 22nd race at "The Monster Mile" this weekend. Stricklin's average finish is 20.09 with two top-five, five top-10, and 11 top-20 finishes. His average start is 23.04 with one top-five, four top-10 and seven top-20 starts.

Team owner Junie Donlavey is 40th with 1,570 points in the NASCAR Winston Cup Series Owners' Points Standings. Donlavey trails A.J. Foyt Racing by 285 points for 39th. Stricklin is 41st with 1,281 points in the NASCAR Winston Cup Series Drivers' Points Standings. Stricklin trails Buckshot Jones (40th) by 58 points.
