Brian Vickers outshone his more high profile Hendrick Motorsport team-mates to qualify his CMAC Financial Chevrolet on pole position for Sunday's Pop Secret 500 at California Speedway. Championship leader Jeff Gordon could only manage eighth, the third Hendrick car of Jimmie Johnson 16th. But looking very strong are the Ray Evernham Dodges. Jeremy Mayfield and Kasey Kahne, both making last gasp attempts to earn a place in the final top 10 championship shootout, start second and fifth, while Bill Elliott returns for one of his occasional races with a third start spot.
