Wednesday 28th May 2003 marks the 75th anniversary of the first ever speedway meeting at the prestigious Wimbledon Stadium. Wimbledon Speedway have chosen to celebrate this special occasion by resurrecting some of the famous clubs from the proud history of speedway in the capital, to once again do battle.

Modern day Conference League riders will compete in the London Best Pairs over a 15 heat format, and BBC London are marking the event by filming on the night for a special programme to be transmitted in June.

The team managers are all famous speedway riders from the past and all actually rode for the teams they manage on the night. Freddie Williams was World Champion in both 1950 and 1953 whilst Trevor Hedge, Olle Nygren and Ron How all made World Final appearances in the 50's, 60's and 70's.

This should be a real night of nostalgia with the famous body colours of six London speedway teams proudly represented to celebrate 75 years of London speedway. A special souvenir programme with a replica 1928 front cover will be sold on the night.

And to bring things right up to date, big time sport returns to Plough Lane on Wednesday 9th July when Wimbledon Speedway proudly stages the third and deciding Under 21 Test Match between Great Britain and Sweden.

In a massive boost for sport in South West London, world class speedway riders will once again grace the plush surroundings of Wimbledon Stadium as Plough Lane prepares to host its first International for nearly 20 years.

Dons rider Danny Giffard is definitely in contention for a place in the home side and will be keen to continue his run of success over the next month or so.
