Contrary to popular belief that injured rally star Colin McRae would be under the knife today [Friday], it has emerged that an operation to set his broken cheekbone will now take place on Monday of next week.

Doctors decided to let swelling surrounding the injury, caused by a high-speed crash in Corsica last weekend, to subside before undertaking surgery to realign the bone.

The double fracture was confirmed by specialists once McRae had returned home to Scotland from the Mediterranean island, where he had crashed out of the eleventh round of the World Rally Championship. The operation will now take place on Monday at Murrayfield Hospital in Edinburgh.

McRae's co-driver Nicky Grist somehow managed to emerge unscathed from the accident, which occurred on the tenth stage of the rally, but has confirmed that the Scot is already talking about an entry on the San Remo event in two weekend's time.
