A number of spectators are feared to have been injured following Carlos Sainz's crash on SS11 of the Rally of Great Britain.

The Spaniard is thought to have rolled his Focus at high speed into a spectator area, but was able to rejoin and finish the stage 4 minutes down. The stage (together with SS12) was later cancelled as ambulances were called to the scene to treat the injured.

Reuters report that soon after the accident a Ford spokesman told local radio: "We know that Carlos went off and hit some spectators, we don't know the number yet. Carlos was told to continue by marshals, but the stage has now been cancelled and ambulances are on the way in."

Rally spokesmen John Horton also backed up Sainz's actions.

"They (Sainz and co-driver Luis Moya) did precisely what was expected of them," he said when asked whether Sainz should have stopped to lend assistance. "In the event of an accident, drivers are required to carry on to the next radio point."
