McRae is believed to have been 5 kilometres into the stage, which is 24.21 kilometres in length when the incident occurred.

Ford team boss Malcolm Wilson told www.worldrallynews.com: "A helicopter is on the scent, and they are both out of the car. Nicky [Grist - co-driver] is fine but Colin has a cut finger and is possibly concussed. He was stuck in the car for some time."

Prior to the crash McRae had been running fourth overall and the Brit had sent the fastest time in SS13, and was joint sixth quickest in SS14, the stage before the accident occurred.

The Scot has now been taken to hospital in Ajaccio for a detailed check-up.

A Ford spokesperson told Reuters: "He's being taken to hospital by helicopter and there is the possibility that he may have broken something in his hand but it is nothing serious."

The Rallye de France will continue, but it has been delayed by around one hour.
