Scotland's Colin McRae is prepared to amputate his little finger rather than give up the fight for his second World Rally Championship title.

McRae severely damaged the digit on his left hand when he crashed out of the Corsican event on the penultimate stage on Sunday 10th March.

McRae was airlifted to hospital where he was treated for a broken and gashed finger as well as bruised ribs and leg.

Before he decides on this drastic measure, brave McRae has chosen to compete in the Rallye Catalunya Costa Brava in Spain for Ford this weekend, (Friday 22nd - Sunday 24th March).

Fans in the UK can monitor the star's progress by tuning into the weekend's coverage on Channel 4.

Martin Whittaker, Director of Ford European Motorsport, revealed earlier on today that if the finger continues to hamper McRae's driving, then it may have to go.

Whittaker noted: "Colin said to me a couple of days ago: 'if the damaged finger does get in the way in Catalunya and we've got four or five rallies coming up that we know we can win then, if it's going to be an impediment, I'll just have it taken off'."

"It's not a decision he's going to take lightly, but I think it shows the commitment and level of effort these guys are willing to put into their careers."

McRae would not be the first sports person to lose a limb for the sake of his sport. Earlier this year Daniel Chick, the Australian Rule footballer chose to have his repeatedly dislocated ring finger amputated after surgery failed to fix the problem.
