Greek legend Aris Vovos will be the only local driver in a WRC car on the Acropolis Rally this coming weekend, when drives a Subaru Impreza S11 run by Atoyle Kazaz.
Vovos is no stranger to the Atoyle Kazaz set-up and this weekend's event will be his fifth with the Turkish squad. Last year he finished twelfth overall on home soil with them and he is eager to do even better this year and match his 2004 success, when he managed to finish eighth. Vovos tested the S11 for the first time recently in Athens, where he concentrated on adapting the car to his driving style. After completing a number of kilometres, he was very happy with his first run in the car.
Atolye Kazaz team director Ercan Kazaz meanwhile is hopeful Vovos can do well, to match the recent success of Kristian Sohlberg, who was sixth overall on the last event in Sardinia with their S11.
"We did a good job by re-building the car right after Italy in less than a week," said Kazaz. "This rally is really important for us as it is the home event for Vovos and [his co-driver, Loris Meletopoulos] 'EL-EM'.
"The Acropolis Rally is the hardest event in the calendar. I hope Vovos will enjoy his run in our Subaru Impreza. I have to point out that the organisers have taken incredible measures to increase the popularity of the event and I think this is the right approach for all the events for the future. Popularity means more support from sponsors."
