World Supersport rider John McGuinness' season continues to go from bad to worse, after the Irishman was ruled out of the Kyalami round by illness.

Having already been forced to miss Philip Island after a crash while filming at the Croft circuit in England, McGuinness was raring to go in South Africa before being laid low by a mystery bug. The Honda UK team initially believed that its charge had contracted influenza, but McGuinness' lack of appetite eventually forced it to seek further medical advice.

A visit to a local hospital proved that the case was more serious than a heavy cold, when it was discovered that McGuinness had pneumonia on his left lung - a condition that naturally ruled him out of action this weekend.

No time scale has been applied to his recovery, with the chance that the condition could develop further before improving.
