Irwin targets Silverstone repeat to grab Showdown momentum

With Glenn Irwin on the cusp of securing a Bennetts British Superbike Showdown spot, the Be Wiser Ducati rider is eager to repeat his Silverstone showing from 12 months ago when he clinched his maiden race win.

Irwin is currently 68 points clear of nearest BSB Showdown challenger FS-3 Racing Kawasaki’s Danny Buchan despite a ‘difficult’ past two rounds at Thruxton and Cadwell Park.

The Northern Irish rider can effectively book his Showdown spot after the first race at Silverstone’s triple-header as long as he doesn’t concede more than 18 points to Buchan – a race which saw him clinch his maiden BSB win last year.

“I’m raring to go at Silverstone, for me now it’s about going out and enjoying the three races this weekend and if I do, I should score enough points to get into the Showdown,” Irwin said. “It’s been a difficult past two rounds for us, which didn’t reflect our true pace, so hopefully with some good luck we can put that right.

“I have great memories of Silverstone after taking the win there last year, so the plan is to do the same this year, although the new layout will be fun.”

BSB will switch to using the National circuit layout at Silverstone following the safety concerns during last month’s British MotoGP round on the Grand Prix track, which eventually led the full cancellation of all races, with the weekend schedule adjusted to allow riders to get up to speed on the 1.6-mile circuit.
