DTM calendar 2002 approved.
The DTM calendar for the 2002 season, as proposed by the ITR (Internationale Tourenwagen Rennen e. V.), has been approved by the DMSB (Deutscher Motor Sport Bund e.V.) during its board meeting in Frankfurt/Main yesterday.
Just like 2001, the calendar includes ten rounds. The opening round and the season final will traditionally be taking place in Hockenheim.

In 2002, six DTM-rounds will be taking place in Germany. Furthermore, there will be races at the A1-Ring in Austria and in Zandvoort, The Netherlands again. New venues in the calendar are the circuits of Donington (GB) and Zolder (B).
Hans Werner Aufrecht, chairman of the ITR said: "The DTM calendar for 2002 presents itself as a good mixture of interesting and challenging circuits for the drivers. The new venues are making the series even more attractive and are increasing the DTM's popularity in neighbouring European countries."
New, internationally renowned drivers like Jean Alesi and Karl Wendlinger, as well as multiple British touring car champion Alain Menu will also add to that.
Aufrecht continues: "Because of the multitude of top-class sports events during the summer, the calendar planning for this season proved to be particularly difficult. But the manufacturers of the DTM and all partners have joined forces for this purpose."
Collisions with Formula 1 and the Le Mans 24-hour race have been avoided. DMSB chairman Winnie Urbinger added: "The DTM-calendar for 2002 is attractive and leaves no wishes open. The collision with the 24-hour race at the N?rburgring is a compromise, which could not be avoided, but the ITR made the decision in mutual agreement with both organisers."
Together, the ADAC-Nordrhein, organiser of the classic event in the Eifel, and the ITR decided to negotiate about a detailed planning.
