A BMW WilliamsF1 spokesman has confirmed reports that the team's chief designer, Gavin Fisher, has been seriously injured in an off-road motorcycle accident in the USA.

The extent of the 40-year old's injuries were not revealed, but the team confirmed that he is in a stable condition in hospital south of Los Angeles, and underwent surgery on the same day as the accident. His initial recuperation is expected to take a minimum of three weeks, and he will not be repatriated to the UK until doctors are happy with his condition. Fisher has been able to communicate with visitors, however, and has also spoken to WilliamsF1 technical director Sam Michael.

"I spoke to Gavin over the weekend and, thankfully, the surgery he underwent immediately after his accident appears to have been successful," the Australian - who has endured a baptism of fire since taking over from Patrick head in June - said, "However, he will be unable to fly back to the UK for some weeks. Naturally, we wish Gavin all the best for a speedy recovery."

The team has also confirmed that Mark Loasby, a senior design engineer employed by Williams for over 14 years, has agreed to provide cover for Fisher until his return to work.

"It is fortunate that we have strength in depth in the design office, and Mark Loasby will cover Gavin's post during his recuperation," Michael confirmed, "Much of the fundamental layout work for the FW27 is already underway, but Mark's experience will prove useful."
