In a bid to try and increase numbers of overtaking and improve racing, the FIA has experimented with the amount of DRS zones made available at circuits this year, adding an extra zone at Melbourne and Montreal.

This year’s Austrian Grand Prix will also include an additional DRS zone after Turn 1, with the aim of allowing cars to follow each other more closely on the run into the uphill braking zone at Turn 3.

“We have added one DRS zone in Austria and there will be three detection and three activation points, a new one between Turns 1 and 3,” F1 race director Charlie Whiting said.

Extra DRS zones failed to have a significant impact on racing in Australia and Canada, with both races criticised for a lack of overtaking.

The Red Bull Ring previously featured two DRS zones, one along the main start-finish straight and one on the short blast between Turns 3 and 4.
