Hamilton needed "absolute perfection" to beat Bottas to 90th F1 pole

Lewis Hamilton says it required ''absolute perfection'' for him to claim the 90th pole position of his Formula 1 career - his seventh at the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Mercedes dominated Saturday at the Hungaroring with Hamilton and team-mate Valtteri Bottas locking out the front row, over a second clear of its nearest rivals.

Hamilton has a chance to equal Michael Schumacher's record for the most grand prix victories at a single circuit - Hamilton currently has seven in Hungary; Schumacher with eight wins in France.

“Crazy. I have to pinch myself - it doesn’t register,” Hamilton said. “It’s quite humbling to be honest because I get to work with an incredible group of people, who without I wouldn’t have the opportunity to do so.

“Massively thankful to everyone back home - the guys here do such an amazing job. Valtteri doesn’t make it easy for me at all. It requires absolute perfection when it comes to doing laps and qualifying like that - it is one of the things that I enjoy most.''

With rain forecast for tomorrow's race, Hamilton isn't taking anything for granted.

“It’s a long run down to turn one so nothing’s a given here. We’ve just got to do the work this evening and ultimately I’ve got to deliver at the start tomorrow. It is quite a long race and we don’t know what this weather’s going to do for us tomorrow.

“For sure I’m going to have my head down and be focusing as hard as I can to try to bring a one-two home for the team.''
