Tributes have started to come in from the motorsport community following the death of Formula 2 driver Anthoine Hubert at the Belgian Grand Prix.

Hubert tragically succumbed to injuries sustained in a serious accident during Saturday’s F2 feature race at Spa-Francorchamps.

The 22-year-old Frenchman was involved in a multi-car incident on the second lap of the race that resulted in his Arden car hitting the wall at the exit of the high-speed Raidillon corner before being struck by oncoming driver Juan Manuel Correa.

The race was immediately suspended before later being cancelled while medical crews attended the scene of the crash.

Hubert, who won the 2018 GP3 Series title prior to his graduation to F2 this year, was a member of the Renault Formula 1 junior programme.

As the devastating news filtered through, tributes began to be shared by teams and fellow drivers on social media…

F1 world championship leader Lewis Hamilton wrote on Instagram: “This is devastating. God rest your soul Anthoine. My prayers and thoughts are with you are your family today.

“If a single one of you watching and enjoying this sport think for a second what we do is safe your hugely mistaken.

“All these drivers put their life on the line when they hit the track and people need to appreciate that in a serious way but because it is not appreciated enough. Not from the fans nor some of the people actually working in the sport.

“Anthoine is a hero as far as I’m concerned, for taking the risk he did to chase his dreams. I’m so sad that this has happened. Let’s lift him up and remember him. Rest in peace brother.”

Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto added: "It is almost impossible to find the words in these that are moments of great pain. Today's episode brings us back to reality brutally, reminding us that the motor sport we love so much is sometimes too dangerous.

"This is why we must all continue to work on security to make similar events no longer happen. The promise I want to make on behalf of the Scuderia is that our commitment on this front will be even stronger. Our thoughts and our energy go to Juan Manuel who is struggling.

"The whole team joins the loved ones of Anthoine in the immense pain. "
