Monger claims first victory since accident at Pau Grand Prix

EuroFormula Open driver Billy Monger claimed a sensational last-to-first victory at the Pau Grand Prix to take his first single-seater win since his horrific accident.

Monger, who had both of his legs amputated following a high-speed crash at Donington Park during a British F4 race in 2017, charged through the order to win a chaotic race after pulling off a successful tyre strategy call. 

The Carlin driver had qualified 11th on the grid but with rain starting to fall just ahead of the race start, Monger and his team made a late decision to pit for wet weather tyres on the green flag lap, sending him to the back of the pack. 

With conditions worsening, the gamble paid off as Monger scythed his way through the field and passed drivers who had remained on slicks, before the 20-year-old took advantage of late drama involving race leaders Julian Hanses and Liam Lawson, with the Motopark duo colliding and taking each other out.

Monger inherited the lead and fended off late pressure from Carlin teammate Nicolai Kjaergaard and Yuki Tsunoda when the race restarted after a Safety Car period to seal a remarkable first single-seater victory of his career, a year after making his racing comeback.
