Beginning with this weekend's race at the Chicago Motor Speedway, CART has mandated the implementation of a new, two-stage pit lane speed limiter that was successfully tested during the race in Milwaukee on June 1st.

The new speed limiter maintains a 50-mile-per-hour limit the first time the limiter button on the steering wheel is pushed by the driver. On the second push the speed increases to 85 miles-per hour, which turns into full control on the third push.

In addition to this weekend's CART Grand Prix of Chicago, the new speed limiter will be used in oval events in England and Germany in an effort to get the cars back to normal racing speeds and blend safely back into traffic following pit stops.

The decision to introduce a two-stage limiter gained momentum following Alex Zanardi's horror crash at the German EuroSpeedway when the double CART Champion appeared to lose control on cold tyres as he left pit road and spun directly into the path of Alex Tagliani who was at full racing speed entering turn one.
