Wheldon OK after horror flip at Indy.

Dan Wheldon has walked away from a horrifying late race accident at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in which his Dallara-Honda got airborne, flipped over and spun upside down through the short chute between turns three and four.

The 24 year-old English rookie was running in a strong sixth position in the middle of the lead pack on lap 187 of 200 when his #26 Jim Beam/Klein Tools sponsored Andretti-Green Racing machine snapped sideways in turn three and pitched him into the outside SAFER barrier.

Television replays showed the nose of Wheldon's car tucking into the wall, where air got underneath the left front end. At more than 200mph that was more than enough to lift the Emberton born driver's car into the air, the car flipping once before landing on its roll-hoop and sliding to a halt on the outside of turn four leaving Wheldon trapped.

As safety crews scrambled to the scene, Wheldon was quickly able to release his steering wheel and jump out of the wreckage once the car had been partly righted and walked into the awaiting safety truck.
