Tetsuta Nagashima has broken Joe Roberts’ domination at the 2020 Moto2 opening round in Qatar by topping warm-up ahead of Jorge Navarro, with the American rider remaining in close contention with third place in warm-up.

The Red Bull KTM Ajo rider used his last lap in the 20-minute session to post a 1m 59.565s to claim the fastest time in warm-up and push Navarro into second place.

But the Speed Up rider did keep ahead of pole-sitter Roberts for American Racing, as history awaits the 22-year-old with the opportunity to become the first rider from the United States to win in the intermediate class since John Kocinski back at the 1990 Australian round.

Augusto Fernandez, who has become EG 0,0 Marc VDS’s sole rider for this weekend following team-mate Sam Lowes’ withdrawal due to an ongoing shoulder injury, moved up to fourth place in warm-up ahead of Sky Racing VR46’s Marco Bezzecchi.

Moto2 debutant Aron Canet surged into sixth place for Aspar Speed Up in front of Enea Bastianini on the Italtrans Racing machine. Remy Gardener, bouncing back from two falls earlier this weekend, slotted into eighth place for the SAG Team ahead of Marcel Schrotter for Liqui Moly Intact GP.

Nicolo Bulega rounded out the top 10 for Federal Oil Gresini, while front-row starter Luca Marini endured a low-key warm-up down in 15th place for Sky Racing VR46.

Moto2 shares centre stage with Moto3 at the Losail International Circuit this weekend with the MotoGP premier class event cancelled amid the coronavirus outbreak. The 2020 Moto3 opener in Qatar gets underway at 16:20 local time, followed by the Moto2 race at 18:00 local time.
