125: Simon, Smith hold formation at Jerez.

Julian Simon not only set the fastest time during all three days of the 125cc test at Jerez, which concluded on Wednesday, but also broke the official lap record from 2006 by almost 0.3sec.

The Aspar Aprilia rider lowered his best lap time by almost two seconds during the test, when team-mate Bradley Smith was his nearest rival on all three days. Having been almost one second behind Simon on day two, Smith clawed some of the Spaniard's advantage back to leave Jerez 0.682sec from the top.

The two Aspar stars were in a class of their own - the next best rider being at least half a second behind Smith on all three days. KTM's Marc Marquez had been third fastest on day one, before being surpassed by Derbi's Sandro Cortese on both the second and final day.

Marquez fell twice on the final day, and was joined in the gravel by Sergio Gadea and Dominique Aegerter. All were unharmed, with Gadea finishing the day fifth overall - where he had been on day two - despite reducing his best lap time by one second.

Esteve Rabat was sixth, his highest ranking at the test, while 2008 British Grand Prix winner Scott Redding slipped from fifth to seventh over the three days.

The next official 125cc test starts at Valencia on January 31.
