King's Lynn kids aiming to outwit the Dons.

The next speedway action at the Norfolk Arena is this coming Saturday (September 7) when the King's Lynn "Kids" face the famous Wimbledon Dons in a Conference League match commencing at 7.30pm.

Yes the Wimbledon Dons, one of the most famous clubs in the history of the sport, are back in business this year (despite a few hiccups along the way!) thanks to the formation of a new consortium mid-term that came together to ensure the continuance of speedway at the famous Plough Lane stadium in south west London.

On track, the Dons have struggled to achieve an measure of success this season and they'll arrive in Norfolk on Saturday occupying the bottom position in the Conference League table and bereft of several riders through injury (notably Nathan Morton, Garry Sweet, Roger Dickerson and Steve Braidford) but, nevertheless, they have named a side for Saturday's clash packed full of experienced campaigners.

Looking at that side, No.1 Wayne Barrett began the year riding for Boston but due to work commitments and the travelling involved from his west country home, he has now linked up with the Dons.

Martin Williams is a former Swindon junior who's had Premier League experience with various clubs in the last few years, including Trelawny last season. The diminutive racer hasn't had the best of luck in recent years with injuries and they have probably prevented him from making the big breakthrough in the sport.

Justin Elkins has had something of a chequered history in recent seasons but the Poole asset, who has ridden for several Premier League clubs, CAN beat the best when in the right frame of mind.

With Nathan Morton having broken an ankle in a crash during the Dons heavy defeat at Carmarthen last Sunday, the Dons will operate the rider replacement regulations to cover for him at No.4 if they cannot find a suitable replacement for him this week.

At No.5 the Dons have named Cornishman Jason Prynne (formerly of St. Austell and Exeter) in their line up and he is also riding for the Trelawny Tigers in this year's Premier League.

Chris Hunt skippers the Dons from the reserve berth. He began riding speedway way back in 1979 and made good progress that led to a very good season riding for Milton Keynes in 1984. However that worked against him for no place could be found for him in the line up the following year under the points limitation. That left him somewhat disillusioned and he quit the sport. He's back now though very much making up for lost time and passing on the benefit of his experience to young partner Terry Day.
