What's so super about the SSS on Langley Park?

If you have your finger on Perth's pulse you may have noticed a surge recently. On the banks of one of Perth's biggest assets, the Swan River, a transformation is underway.

Where once there was little more than a wide open space featuring a few trees and some grass, the humble beginnings of what will soon be the Inmarsat Super Stage on Langley Park can now be seen.

We are of course talking of Australia's super stage, the jewel in the crown of the World Rally Championships.

The Inmarsat Super Stage on Langley Park will take nine major contracting groups approximately five weeks to build, while Telstra will spend three weeks setting up telecommunications and installing 50 temporary phone lines. It will only take 10 days to dismantle the stage and two days to remove the telecommunication lines after the event, so take the opportunity over the next few weeks to witness the spectacular preparation of the park while you can (if you're in Perth of course!)

The first stage of construction began on the 23rd of September.

- Surveying of the park began and exterior fencing was erected.
- Over 6.5km of fencing will be erected around the park, pedestrian access and parking areas.

Stage two is currently in progress.

- 15,500 cubic metres of sand and 4,500 cubic metres of clay is hauled in to build the 2.2km track.
- Three temporary grand stands accommodating 7,000 people will be erected.
- More than 3,000 square metres of scaffolding and 28 days will be required to assemble the grandstands, including the Corporate Villas.
- There will be 52 Sky Villas and 12 Super Villas erected.
- 3,000 m? of carpet will be laid and 1,000 m? of silk lining hung in the Villas.

Lastly, Perth folk will witness the erection of the tents and marquees.

- These will be utilised by service crews and 2,500 event staff and volunteers.
- Approximately 9,000m? of tenting will cover Langley Park.

Being situated between the river and the city also sets the Super Stage aside from any other track in the world. No other WRC track can boast a scenic central city locality so easily accessible to the public. But the public's rally experience at Langley Park isn't limited to rallying as it will also host an array of other activities during the event.

From as early as Wednesday 30th October there are activities to get involved in, including the Celebrity Rally Show beginning at 1pm at Forrest Place. From 5.30 pm the Rally Show at Langley Park opens with free entry to the public; The Motor Expo will be operating, the scrutineering begins and your favourite drivers will be available for autograph signing.

Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights will showcase thrilling events such as the Hyundai Celebrity Challenge, Holden vs. Ford V8 Ute Challenge, and a spectacular fireworks finale "Lightning over Langley". And catch the official finish to Telstra Rally Australia on Sunday 3rd November at 4pm in Forrest Place.
