Jonathan Rea has topped the opening free practice session in Aragon in wet but drying conditions as World Superbikes returns to Europe.

The current World Superbike championship leader saw his 2m 02.298s comfortably take the head of the timesheet from Aruba.it Racing Ducati’s Marco Melandri who is eager to fight back after losing the points advantage last time out in Thailand.

Leon Camier’s debut with the Magneti Marelli electronics-equipped Red Bull Honda had a strong start taking third on the times less than one-tenth off of Melandri while the full grid took a tentative start to the race weekend in wet conditions due to overnight rain at Aragon.

Michael Ruben Rinaldi, who will been competing for Aruba.it Racing Ducati’s junior squad at all the European races, also had an eye-catching start in FP1 with fourth place ahead of Pata Yamaha’s Michael van der Mark.

Eager to bounce back from frustrating mechanical issues in Thailand, Tom Sykes held sixth place for Kawasaki with Althea BMW’s Loris Baz enjoying an encouraging session in the wet after fully recovering from a previous shoulder injury.

Local star Xavi Fores on the Barni Ducati held eighth place with Pata Yamaha’s Alex Lowes and Milwaukee Aprilia’s Lorenzo Savadori completing the top ten to see Thailand race two winner Chaz Davies for Aruba.it Racing Ducati shuffled down in 11th.

Davide Giuglinao, acting as stand-in for the injured Eugene Laverty at Milwaukee Aprilia,  produced a measured start to his return to the World Superbike championship in 17th place.
