Lucas Mahias has pulled out a sizeable margin on his World Supersport rivals in wet conditions at Donington Park as the rain continued to fall at the British circuit.

Mahias produced a final flying lap of 1m 44.775s to end the first practice session over eight-tenths of a second ahead of nearest challenger Jules Cluzel, while the defending World Supersport champion’s consistency and pace impressed in tough conditions.

With the GRT Yamaha rider ahead of Cluzel on the NRT Yamaha, wet weather specialist Anthony West rose up to third on the times for his EAB Kawasaki squad ahead of title challenger Sandro Cortese on the Kallio Racing Yamaha.

Raffaelle De Rosa continued his impressive showing from Imola to take fifth place for MV Agusta in FP1 ahead of Federico Caricasulo (GRT Yamaha) who crashed out late on in the session.

Hanner Sommer was another to impress in the rain at the British track for Racedays Honda, while Sheridan Morais – returning to action in place of the retired Kenan Sofuoglu at Puccetti Kawasaki – made a solid start in eighth place. Kyle Smith (Team Lorini Honda) remained inside the top ten ahead of Wayne Tessels (Chromeburner Kawasaki) despite a highside off at Redgate.
