Griffiths -who will attempt a 260-feet World Long Jump Record at Moto1- flew high above a selection of the Moto1 competitors as the six-week countdown to Britain's search for the best motorcycle sports all-rounder began.

"The excitement for Moto1 is growing and Thursday's launch at Donington Park was just a tiny sample of what will be a truly memorable weekend," said Moto1 Chairman Peter Duke.

Road racers Steve Plater and Craig Jones, supermoto stars Leighton Haigh and Anita Doran Moto1's only female competitor- and stunt rider Craig Jones were all on hand as the countdown was launched.

"What is happening at Donington Park at the end of October is a sign of things to come," said stunt ace Jones. "The future is all about events like this offering entertainment, fun and a serious degree of competition for the Moto1 riders. I can't wait to get going."

Steve Plater, a British Superbike championship rider with the Virgin Mobile Yamaha team, was asked who he thought would be strong competition.

"Moto1 is bringing together 24 riders from different disciplines and I don't think anyone really knows who will start as a favourite for the ?6000 first prize," he commented.

The first ever Moto1 spectacular involves 24 of Britain's leading motorcycle sports stars doing battle during an action-packed two days of competition over four disciplines; road racing, motocross, supermoto and trials.

Moto1 action will run from 9am to 4.30pm each day. Additional attractions include the final round of the World Stunt Riding championship, a World Long Jump record attempt, freestyle motocross demonstrations, youth trials and motocross, a National Supermoto, two days of road races, a Classic Parade, the "world famous" Purple Helmets and an extensive trade exhibition.

"Thursday's launch really got everyone into the mood for Moto1," claimed event Director Robbie Allan. "After four years of planning we don't have too long to wait now.

"The reaction from spectators to the first ever Moto1 event has been overwhelming, there are coach loads of fans travelling from all corners of Britain and advance tickets are now being snapped up by the hour."
