Josh Brookes produced a final lap flyer to jump to the top of the times for McAMS Yamaha at Silverstone on the National circuit while Bennetts British Superbike championship leader Leon Haslam escaped injury after a heavy high side crash.

With BSB switching to the National circuit layout due to safety concerns on the Grand Prix track following the cancellation of the British MotoGP two weeks ago, Brookes notched up a 54.395s to dart to the top as the chequered flag was readied in FP1.

The 2015 BSB champion, who is aiming to secure a spot in the Showdown at the Silverstone triple-header, edged out McAMS Yamaha team-mate Tarran Mackenzie with Be Wiser Ducati’s Andrew Irwin in third place.

BSB championship leader Haslam triggered a brief red flag stoppage in FP1 when he high sided off at Brooklands in a dramatic crash. The JG Speedfit Kawasaki rider was immediately taken to the medical centre and was cleared to continue ahead of FP2 after avoiding any serious injuries in the off.

With Haslam missing the majority of FP1, he was shuffled down the order to 19th place while the National circuit produced a shake-up in the running order with all riders getting up to speed on the unfamiliar layout.

Anvil Hire Yamaha’s James Ellison grabbed fourth place ahead of Buildbase Suzuki’s Richard Cooper and Tommy Bridewell on the Moto Rapido Ducati.

Michael Laverty, who still holds a slim shot at a Showdown spot, ended the session seventh fastest of Tyco BMW ahead of fellow BSB top six contenders Bradley Ray (Buildbase Suzuki) and Glenn Irwin (Be Wiser Ducati) with Peter Hickman rounding out the top ten on the Smiths Racing BMW.

Nearest challenger to the current top six Danny Buchan ended FP1 in 12th place for FS-3 Racing Kawasaki with fellow BSB Showdown hunter Christian Iddon in 16th place.
