"I'm very anxious to start my rehab," Lazier said, "At the same time, I'm very excited about the second chance I've been given with the incredible work done by all doctors involved, including Dr Henry Bock and Dr [Terry] Trammell."

Lazier could be out of competition for up to six months after surgery to repair the spinal fracture, according to orthopaedic surgeon Trammell, who performed the operation at Methodist Hospital. Despite initially looking to return to action in time for the Indianapolis 500 later this month, Lazier will have to wear a brace for eight to twelve weeks. Although disappointed at missing the showcase event of the year, Lazier was grateful for the best wishes he had received.

"I appreciate all the fan support," he said, "I will always bleed Menard blue."
