Priestley undergoes successful back/foot surgery.

Indy Racing Infiniti Pro Series driver Jason Priestley underwent successful surgery on Wednesday at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis to repair fractures in his back and feet.

Priestley, 32, from Vancouver, British Columbia, suffered multiple injuries in an Infiniti Pro Series practice accident on Sunday at Kentucky Speedway. He suffered a moderate concussion as well as a fracture of his ninth thoracic vertebra. In addition to a contusion around his left eye, Priestley has lacerations on the bridge of his nose and left cheek, neck lacerations and fractures in both feet.

Orthopaedic surgeon Dr. Kevin Scheid performed the operation on Priestley's feet, and orthopaedic surgeon Dr. Terry Trammell operated on Priestley's back during the surgery, which lasted six hours overall.

Priestley is in serious (guarded) but stable condition and has mobility and feeling in all of his extremities the morning of Aug. 15. He should be able to sit up in a chair within the next 24 hours, doctors said.

"He did extremely well through surgery," Scheid said. "The bone repair in both feet went as well as could be expected. I don't foresee a need for any additional reconstructive surgery on the feet.

"He had no external soft tissue injuries to the feet like some of the more catastrophic injuries we've seen, but he had some typical fractures in the arch of the foot that we have seen a number of times in different drivers."

Priestley and his family now are beginning to make plans for his rehabilitation, which could start as early as next week.
