Andrea Dovizioso has returned to the top spot at Silverstone beating home favourite Cal Crutchlow by just 0.005s in the second free practice session.

The Ducati rider, who claimed victory at the British race 12 months ago, bolted to the front during the hunt for single lap speed using the Michelin soft rear tyre to produce a 2m 01.385s.

Crutchlow missed out on beating his former team-mate by five-thousands of a second with his best lap of the session in a strong showing on home soil for the LCR Honda rider.

This morning’s fastest rider Maverick Vinales retained his place at the sharp end with third spot for Movistar Yamaha, inside one-tenth of Dovizioso, to show encouraging signs for the Japanese manufacturer after a tough Austria round last time out.

MotoGP world championship leader Marc Marquez failed to match the front-runners but comfortable secured a provisional Q2 spot in fourth ahead of Austria race-winner Jorge Lorenzo for Ducati.

Jack Miller has continued his impressive resurgence started in FP1 with sixth placwe on the Pramac Ducati ahead of Monster Yamaha Tech 3’s Johann Zarco and Movistar Yamaha’s Valentino Rossi.

After a tricky morning session, Andrea Iannone recovered on the Suzuki in ninth with Alvaro Bautista grabbed the final top 10 spot on the Angel Nieto Ducati.

That saw Takaaki Nakagami narrowly miss out in an impressive 11th place for the MotoGP rookie on the LCR Honda ahead of Pramac Ducati’s Danilo Petrucci.

Tito Rabat joined the fight for a top 10 place midway through FP2 but saw his charge cut short by a high-speed crash at Farm Curve.

Franco Morbidelli grabbed 14th place in FP2 for Marc VDS Honda ahead of factory rider Dani Pedrosa in 15th who struggled in the cooler conditions.
