Some of the south's top young speedway riders gathered in Weymouth as winter training schools returned to the Wessex Stadium following a break of almost 20 years. In those days it was the legendary Lew Coffin who put youngsters through their paces including the likes of the late, great Simon Wigg.

The new sessions are now being overseen by Wildcats chairman Brian White along with the club's recently appointed training instructor, Steve Piper. White explained: "This was the first training school for many, many years and I was delighted with the response from riders. We had more than 15 lads turn up on the night and there were some very impressive performances."

"The old training schools were some of the most popular in the sport and many of the riders who worked with Lew Coffin went on to be household names. Hopefully we can unearth some of the sport's future champions and it would be great to see some of these youngsters pushing for a place in the Wildcats line-up next season."

Among those taking part were Wildcat's 12-year-old mascot George Piper and highly-rated schoolboy star Matt Bates while interested spectators included Wey-mouth duo Justin Elkins and Danny Warwick. Training schools will run at the Wessex Stadium from 6pm every Friday (weather permitting) with more details available by calling Brian White on 07793 838787.
