Rod Smith proved to be the cream of the sport's officials - on a motorcycle - in the charity Ref's Track Day staged at Sittingbourne on Saturday. Smith was only beaten once during the event which saw 12 speedway referees receive training during the day and then get the chance to put into
practice what they had learnt.

Jim Lawrence took second place in the Final with joint-organiser Chris Gay dead-heating with Richard Williams for third spot. With the regular referees busy with on-track activity, Arena-Essex star Paul Hurry took the opportunity to take control of procedings and was delighted to fine the competitors for various transgressions during the
day.

The event was organised by Gay in conjunction with Sittingbourne promoter Graham Arnold, with proceeds going to the Speedway Riders' Benevolent Fund.
