Sheffield's fast rising teenage superstar Simon Stead is the new British Under 21 speedway champion after winning the crown with a stunning unbeaten performance at Wolverhampton on Monday evening.

Stead has been in remarkable form so far this season both for Sheffield and in guest performances for his parent club Peterborough at Elite League level. He went in to the meeting as one of the favourites and did not disappoint.

What makes the win of particular note is that he suffered suspected broken fingers after a clash with David Howe (who went on to finish second) in his second ride. Despite the pain, Simon had the fingers on his throttle hand strapped up and then proceeded to win his three remaining outings.

Stead's victory means he now automatically qualifies for this Sunday's world championship British Semi Final at Newport and a high finish there will take him through to the next stage of the race for a Grand Prix spot in 2002. He is a leading contender for the World Under 21 Championship which is due to be held at Peterborough later in the year.
