Following the enormous success of the inaugural Speedway Grand Prix at the Millennium Stadium, in Cardiff, this year, Benfield Sports International has announced that the British round of the 2002 Speedway World Championship will again be held at the Welsh capital, on Saturday June 8.

On making the announcement, John Postlethwaite, Chief Executive of BSI, said that he hopes for an even greater attendance next year: "The Grand Prix at the Millennium Stadium this year was a huge success and one that the thousands who attended will remember for the rest of their lives.

"Judging by the public and media reaction we had after the event, we're anticipating a full house next year which will make it the second largest motorsport event in Britain next year after the Formula 1 Grand Prix at Silverstone," boasted Postlethwaite, although the 120,000+ World Superbike fans who pour into Brands Hatch every year may well dispute this claim.

Nevertheless, Postlethwaite concluded: "The huge anticipation and demand for the date of next year's event has forced us to announce the date before this year's championship has been decided. We're all looking forward to returning to Cardiff."

Bob Evans, Millennium Stadium Manager, also gave his seal of approval: "We're delighted to have Speedway back at the Millennium Stadium. The atmosphere created within the stadium on the night was fantastic and unique. The City of Cardiff is looking forward to welcoming even more Speedway supporters from all over the world next year for what is sure to be a memorable weekend."
