Peterborough's East of England Showground has been awarded the final of the 2002 World Team Cup subject to final negotiations with stadium owners.

Despite the release of the provisional schedule for the 2002 World Team Cup, the Pterborough speedway promotions are unwilling to celebrate just yet as they are still in negotiation with the stadium owners.

Peterborough, along with Poole, Coventry and Sheffield, has been pencilled in to stage the qualifying rounds of the competition, which starts on Sunday, August 4, with the showpiece final expected to be held at Peterborough on Saturday, August 10.

Peterborough co-promoter Ian Jarvis said: "It would be a huge honour to stage such a fantastic event. We were all out in Poland to see this year's World Team Cup and it's certain to be another wonderful spectacle when it comes to Great Britain.

"We now have one of the most exciting race tracks in the world, the feedback from fans and riders this season has been fantastic. It would certainly be a track worthy of staging such a huge event.

"But we don't want to say any more until talks with the Showground are complete, it would not be fair on them to comment any further."
