Wimbledon Speedway are close to finalising their 2002 line up after capturing four new riders, with the final team member set to be unveiled next week.

Hot on the heels of the recent signature of new number one Glen Phillips, the Dons management are delighted to have secured the services of four quality riders who will hopefully provide the strength in depth to see the famous Dons challenging for silverware this season.

Twenty-two-year old Martin Williams arrives at Plough Lane with a near eight-point average from his last club Newport, and has been installed as the vital third heat leader for the Dons. This season, the Dons management are keen to see him translate his undoubted promise into prolific points scoring and have pencilled Williams into the number three position.

Mark 'The Undertaker' Phillips gained a massive following at Somerset and is one of the most entertaining characters in the sport today. His 2001 season was marred by a serious accident at Exeter, but now fully fit, he is set to entertain the Plough Lane faithful with his showman antics.

Ex Don Gary Sweet makes an emotional return to the track where he began his speedway career in the early 90's, and following spells at Rye House and Mildenhall, Sweet returns to Plough Lane with a handy five point average.

The final new signing is the potential packed youngster Chris Geer who comes with an impressive pedigree in the shape of father Trevor, who rode with distinction for Eastbourne, Oxford and White City in the 'seventies and 'eighties. Geer junior is well regarded and is one to watch this season.

"We are delighted to have captured such a quality quartet who will entertain the fans," Dons co-promoters David Croucher and Steven Ribbons said, commenting on the new signings, "Our squad is nearing completion and we have kept our promise to bring the Dons supporters a competitive team."

The final piece in the jigsaw is set to be filled in the next few days and the rider in question will be a great addition to the 2002 Conference League as well as giving the Dons a dynamic top two.
