Five World Champions will top the bill at Briggo's Extreme Races - a revolutionary 27-event spectacular at Coventry on Sunday.

World Under 21 Champion and home idol Lee Richardson will head the eight-strong contingent in action during the modern speedway section of the three-hour show.

And he will be joined by 2002 World Ice Speedway Champion Per-Olov Serenius, four-times World Hot Road Champion Barry Lee, four-times World Speedway Champion Barry Briggs and five-times individual World Speedway title-winner Ove Fundin.

Two-times ice-racing king Serenius will make a bid to lower the all-time four-lap Brandon track record on the machine on which he obliterated the Russian challenge at this year's World Final.

Motor racing ace Lee - ranked number 16 in a Millennium poll of drivers, otherwise dominated by Grand Prix stars like Ayrton Senna, Michael Schumacher and Juan Fangio - will roar around the 303-metre in a Ford Focus rally-cross car straight from the World Championship - against Briggs on a conventional speedway bike.

And all-time great Fundin will zip up his black leathers again for a Golden Greats match-race series against Briggs who has been working on the show for the last 12 months.

Other big attractions include a breath-taking competition between three of Britain's world-ranked moto-cross jumpers, Gary Taylor, Jamie Squibb and Sean Vudivik who will be performing their incredible stunts high above the Brandon grandstand.

Teenager Taylor is one of only two Brits ever to perform the Rock Solid routine in which he twice loses contact with his bike while in mid-air and is perfecting a brand new trick that will be the talk of the event.

Fans will also see the first public appearance of a brand new machine - the MotoSlide bike which is a conversion from a conventional moto-crosser into a speedway-style bike that will skid around the corners.

Two prototype bikes will be ridden by ex-British Speedway Champion Andy Grahame and one of Britain's top all-round motor-cyclists Arthur Browning. Both were stars of moto-cross before switching to successful speedway careers and both are now back to their first love on a regular basis. The pair will take part in two races for moto-crosses with ten or 12 riders on the track at the same time!

Also due for a British appearance is the 650 c.c. Japanese wonder bike - used for the Far East's circuit racing which attracts up to 100,000 fans a meeting with millions spent on betting. Briggs is the only Westerner to own one of the machines and he will actually ride it around the shale track to demonstrate the Japanese version of speedway racing!

Other events in a jam-packed afternoon of two, three and four-wheeled motor-sport will be the appearance of both quads and sidecars.

Briggs said: "The programme will cover just about every form of motor-sport you can think of with track record attempts, conventional modern-day racing with some of the country's top stars, a Superbike burn-up in which riders have to burst their back tyres by spinning around and building up the friction, and the first-ever Demolition Derby which promises to provide both laughs and a fight to the finish in which the last rider standing is the winner."

There have been fears that the Demolition Derby might get out of hand but top referee and FIM official Graham Reeve will be in charge and will ensure everyone complies with the strict rules and regulations to prevent unnecessary injuries.

Briggs added: "One way or another I reckon there will be around 76 competitors taking part in the afternoon's 27 major events and it will be wheels all the way. I reckon at a conservative count if you add up the wheels from all the bikes and car it will come to something around 150 - I just hope we don't have a lot of punctures!"

Joining Richardson, who will dash back from Saturday night's European Grand Prix in Poland to race on Sunday, will be World Under 21 bronze medallist David Howe, British Under 21 Champion Simon Stead, Australian Under 21 Champion Travis McGowan, ex-World number two Les Collins, brilliant teenage prospect Lee Complin, ex-Coventry favourite Shaun Tacey and Australian international Shane Parker.

Coventry's normal admission prices - ?12 adults, ?6 children - will apply.
