Following their breathtaking 47-43 success at Sheffield, Swindon Pro-Fit Sprockets have agreed to race in a challenge match at Reading on Monday 9 June. Their amazing victory in South Yorkshire brought to an end the longest unbeaten record in the country, for Sheffield hadn't lost a home Conference League fixture for seven years.
The Prowlers last league defeat on home soil occurred way back on 28 July 1996, when Linlithgow emerged victorious. Sheffield didn't run a Conference League side from 1997, until their return in 2000, and since then they had won 29 and drawn one of their 30 home league matches. They also won two matches in 1996, following the loss to Linlithgow, so actually boasted a record of 31 wins and one draw, when taking home league matches alone into account.
One other point interest concerns new Swindon recruit Barry Campbell, who actually featured in both the aforementioned wins at the Sheffield raceway, netting 8+1 points for Linlithgow in 1996, and 7+1 points for the Sprockets on his Monday night debut.
Swindon would also like to announce another two additions to their Pro-fit Sprocket squad for 2003. Club asset Simon Paget is a name already familiar around Blunsdon, and Nick Lee, who rides in second-half races most weeks at the club and has done enough on track to convince the management that he is worthy of a place in the squad.
Referring briefly to the Sprockets away match at Wimbledon on Wednesday this week (4 June), it is good to note that the team featues no less than FOUR local riders in Swindonians Malcolm Holloway, Lee Smart and Simon Dyminski, plus Nick Lee, who hails from just down the road in Lechlade.
