Alonso pulls clear in Rolex 24 as rain hits Daytona

Fernando Alonso charged into a half-a-minute lead through his second stint for Wayne Taylor Racing in the #10 Cadillac DPi as a rain front hit the Rolex 24 at Daytona through the early morning hours.

Having seen teammate Jordan Taylor drop to third place towards the end of his stint in the Cadillac just as rain arrived at Daytona International Speedway, Alonso quickly found his feet to move into the lead of the race ahead of Acura Team Penske drivers Dane Cameron and Ricky Taylor.

Alonso had been running 20 seconds clear of the field earlier in race before a full course caution wiped away his advantage, but the Spaniard was able to restore the margin and double it nearing the final third of the race.

Alonso managed to also put a lap on the recent race-leading Action Express Racing Cadillac, leaving only the pair of Acuras on the lead lap.

Ben Hanley continues to lead for DragonSpeed in LMP2 ahead of the team's sister car, now running three laps clear after the #18 Oreca 07 Gibson hit trouble in the 15th hour.

Risi Competizione moved into the lead of GTLM via James Calado, who runs ahead of Porsche's Laurens Vanthoor and Ford's Sebastien Bourdais, while Luca Stolz heads the GTD field for Riley Motorsports in the #33 Mercedes-AMG GT3.
