Ott Tanak has secured victory on the opening stage of Rally Sweden to head the times with Toyota Gazoo Racing team-mate Jari-Matti Latvala in second place, while defending WRC champion Sebastien Ogier sits a lowly ninth.

The Estonian produced a flying run of Karlstad 1 to take the stage win by 0.3 seconds from teammate Latvala with Citroen’s Mads Ostberg in third place narrowly ahead of teammate Kris Meeke in fourth.

Andreas Mikkelsen heads up a Hyundai trio in joint-fourth after setting an identical time to Meeke, with Thierry Neuville one-tenth of a second back in sixth place. Hayden Paddon made a solid start to his 2018 WRC campaign having missed Rallye Monte-Carlo, as he is sharing the third Hyundai with Dani Sordo, with seventh place on SS1.

Esapekka Lappi (Toyota) narrowly leads Ogier for eighth place as Craig Breen (Citroen) completes the top ten contenders. With Teemu Suninen and Elfyn Evans (both M-Sport Ford) in 11th and 12th respectively, Pontus Tidemand leads the WRC2 category for Skoda ahead of teammate Ole Christian Veiby.
