Lorenzo Lanzi, and several unsuspecting rivals, had a lucky escape at the start of race one at Monza on Sunday, when the Italian couldn't stop for the first turn - and just managed to miss all the riders in front of him.

"For sure my start in race 1 could have been a bit more uneventful!" smiled twelfth-on-the-grid Lorenzo, who rejoined with a clear lead before allowing the leaders back through. "I made contact with Rolfo and had to ease off the brake. When I braked again I was going way too fast so I cut through the chicane to avoid causing an incident, and that was my race over at the start.."

Lanzi went on to finish seventh in his and Ducati's home event, but any hopes of a stronger performance in race two ended with an electrical problem on the grid (lower picture).

"I wanted to get a better start in race two but unfortunately my 999 had an electrical problem on the grid. I put my hand up but the race started and I was unable to restart from the pit-lane," he explained.

Team-mate Troy Bayliss finished second and third.
