Troy Bayliss, who lead the way for most of the session was relegated to third place while his team-mate Lorenzo Lanzi crashed at the final corner with 5mins of the session left to run.

Britain's James Toseland was in fourth place on the Hannspree Ten Kate Honda and his team-mate Roberto Rolfo who has been struggling to get to grips with the Silverstone circuit was in sixth place, the rain really could benefit the Italian.

Splitting the Hannspree charge was Noriyuki Haga on the second Yamaha. He was followed by Karl Muggeridge who managed to save a near high side on his Alto Evolution Honda.

Regis Laconi on the PSG-1 Kawasaki graced the top ten in eighth place with Ruben Xaus and Josh Brookes in ninth and tenth respectively.

Max Neukirchner managed to save a crash on his Suzuki Germany bike and ran across the gravel; Alessandro Polita also had a close call on his Celani Suzuki.
