Jonathan Rea has maintained his advantage in the second free practice session at Laguna Seca despite the session being temporarily halted by a red flag.

The World Superbike championship leader produced an early improvement with a 1m 23.104s before pitting ahead of a race simulation while nearest rival Marco Melandri failed to close the gap after crashing early at the corkscrew.

But Rea’s race run was halted by a red flag triggered by Roman Ramos who tipped off at Andretti which forced a quick repair to the safety barriers. With Melandri missing the rest of the session, Rea’s advantage opened up to four-tenths of a second while the second factory Kawasaki of Tom Sykes closed to within one-tenth of the Italian rider.

Alex Lowes kept hold of his place in the top four for Pata Yamaha while Eugene Laverty slipped down to fifth place for Milwaukee Aprilia after failing to find single lap gains in the second session.

Jordi Torres impressed for MV Agusta to move up to sixth place fractionally ahead of Aruba.it Racing Ducati’s Chaz Davies. Xavi Fores was another to improve on the Barni Ducati to jump into the top 10 along with Milwaukee Aprilia’s Lorenzo Savadori as double Donington Park race winner Michael van der Mark struggled to find gains for Pata Yamaha to slip down to 10th.

Loris Baz moved to the edge of the top 10 for Althea BMW less than two-tenths off of van der Mark while Red Bull Honda’s Leon Camier was another to miss out on the provisional Q2 spots down in 12th on the combined times.
