Chaz Davies has halted Jonathan Rea’s timesheet-topping momentum at Laguna Seca by going fastest in the 20-minute final session ahead of qualifying.

The Aruba.it Racing Ducati rider found some impressive overnight gains with his Panigale R to produce a 1m 23.032s to jump to the top of the times by a little over one-tenth of a second from Rea on the factory Kawasaki.

The late improvements by Davies saw Tom Sykes also shuffled down one spot into third place but stays ahead of Aruba.it Racing Ducati’s Marco Melandri by just 0.009s to produce a competitive top four order at the US round.

Alex Lowes leads the charge from the rest of the field for Pata Yamaha in fifth place, two tenths of a second off Melandri, while World Superbike debutant wildcard Josh Herrin hugely impressive on his Yamaha to take sixth place in FP4.

Eugene Laverty had to settle for seventh place for Milwaukee Aprilia in front of MV Agusta’s Jordi Torres and Red Bull Honda’s Leon Camier as Michael van der Mark rounded out the top ten on his Pata Yamaha.

Van der Mark, who displaced Lorenzo Savadori (Milwaukee Aprilia) from the top 10, will need to fight through Superpole 1 after missing out during Friday practice with a wrong direction in set-up with his YZF-R1.

Puccetti Kawasaki’s Toprak Razgatlioglu continued to chip away on his debut at the US circuit to take 12th in FP4 ahead of local star Jake Gagne on the Red Bull Honda. Xavi Fores (Barni Ducati) and Leandro Mercado (Orelac Kawasaki) completed the top 15.
