Tom Sykes has eaten into Jonathan Rea’s advantage in the second free practice session at Magny-Cours as Kawasaki continue to dominate.

The 2013 World Superbike champion set the fastest lap of the middle session with a 1m 37.403s to close to two-tenths of a second off Rea’s top time from FP1, with the Northern Irish rider focusing on long runs with race one set to take place at the same time tomorrow.

Milwaukee Arpilia’s Lorenzo Savadori also closed up to take third place ahead of both Pata Yamaha riders and Althea BMW’s Loris Baz with the local rider slotting into fourth on the combined times.

That pushed Michael van der Mark down to fifth place, with Eugene Laverty splitting the Pata Yamaha pair despite an early fall in FP2, as Alex Lowes was edged down to seventh place.

Marco Melandri recovered from effectively missing all of the morning session due to a technical issue for Aruba.it Racing Ducati to jump into the provisional Q2 spots in eighth place ahead of team-mate Chaz Davies with Barni Ducati’s Xavi Fores rounding out the top ten despite failing to better his FP1 time.

Toprak Razgatlioglu narrowly missed out on the Q2 spots at the end of the second session for Puccetti Kawasaki in 11th place as he pushed Red Bull Honda’s Leon Camier down a spot.
