Michael Van Der Mark and Lucas Mahias both had technical issues and remained in pit lane during the opening stages.

Van Der Mark had two early attempts at leaving pit lane but was unable to do so, as his BMW M 1000 RR had to be wheeled back into the garage. When the Dutchman did eventually make his way out onto the Portuguese circuit, the issue persisted for Van Der Mark as he hit his handlebars in frustration and returned to the garage a lap later.

Van Der Mark was able to set a time late on but could only manage 16th place.

Alvaro Bautista and Honda’s crashing issues continued, as the Spaniard fell twice during FP1. The first fall came after three laps at turn three, while the second was at turn 13 late on.
