World Enduro Championship runner-up David Knight set the pace on the exciting opening day of the Moto1 event at Donington Park on Saturday.

Consistent Knight finished fourth in the trials segment, won the motocross, finished second in the supermoto and took 13th place in the road race.

"I felt pretty comfortable in all four events," said the talented Knight who holds a 14-point lead over Supermoto ace Ady Smith going into Sunday's concluding action. "Even in the road race, my worst event, I was having a great time."

Smith was on the podium in two of Saturday's events - finishing third in both the motocross and supermoto while Wayne Braybrook - a convert from trials to enduro- showed his all-round ability to score in all four disciplines to hold third place overnight.

Up and coming trials star Sam Connor won the morning trial segment of Moto1 and holds fifth overall with Tom Sykes moving from 17th to sixth with victory in the road race and to be the highest placed of the road race aces.

"I think some of the road race lads have been a bit shocked by the ability of the off road stars," said Sykes. "They can turn their hand to most disciplines and be dominant -exactly what David Knight has shown today."
