Ben Currie has claimed top spot in the final practice session of the 2019 Bennetts British Superbike championship by beating title contender Josh Brookes in damp and slippery conditions at Brands Hatch.

With rain continuing to circle the Kent circuit following the frequent showers which hit Friday’s running, Currie made the most of the best conditions to produce a 1m 36.937s on the Quattro Plant JG Speedfit Kawasaki to notch up the fastest time ahead of Be Wiser Ducati’s Brookes by 0.811s.

But with only 18 riders posting representative lap times in FP3, having one eye on qualifying in two hours with conditions expected to improve, the majority of riders opted for conservative running.

The 2015 BSB champion claimed a double victory at the Brands Hatch summer round earlier this season and will need similar results in order to overhaul team-mate Scott Redding’s 28-point lead in the riders’ standings ahead of the triple-header finale this weekend.

Redding opted to sit out the entire FP3 session given the unfavourable conditions, with the ex-MotoGP rider focusing on three podiums results which would guarantee him the 2019 BSB title in his rookie season.

The third and final BSB title contender Tommy Bridwell completed just a single sighting lap of Brands Hatch during FP3 to assess conditions before returning to his Oxford Racing Ducati garage.

The final BSB qualifying of 2019 gets underway at 12:15 as preparation for the opening race of the Brands Hatch finale which is scheduled to start later today at 16:00.
